Main Event Interview: Maria Bamford

"One of the most innovative comedians working today." That's how Patton Oswalt introduced Maria Bamford last October to the audience at the Black Cat during the latest edition of the Comedians of Comedy tour. Bamford then went on to steal the show by seamlessly weaving in characters throughout her twenty minute set. Maria is back in town this weekend headlining at the Arlington Drafthouse. (Friday, March 14th and Saturday March 15th) Local stalwart Erik Myers will also be on the bill.

We were lucky to have a chance to have Maria answer a few questions about her comedic style, approach to writing and thoughts on non-traditional comedy venues.

You've mentioned Steve Martin and Eddie Murphy as being a few of your comedic influences. What about their performance style captivated you?

I like their goofiness-and with Eddie Murphy I liked his characterizations- I think my favorite part was listening with my Dad.

How far were you into your comedy career when you felt truly comfortable with your style?

I guess that’s sort of an ongoing process as an artist/human- I’m always changing but it’s really helped to have things on TV/Internet because the more people who like what I do and come to see me, that really helps me feel more comfy – that people know what they’re coming to see.

How do you or have you in the past curbed the urge to pander to an audience who maybe had a certain expectation in material or delivery of material that differed from what you were presenting?

Well, I only have one act- so, beyond trying to do jokes that I already I have that I think people might like- jokes that are loud or slightly sexual seem to grab people’s attention, but I only have 2 or 3 of those – so, I’m a bit stuck if people don’t like it, they just don’t like it.

What do you find hacky?

I’m not a judge of comedy/art- I think it’s pretty subjective and if somebody laughs or gets something from somebody’s work- then it’s valuable/funny.

How has your material changed over time?

I think/hope I’m more personable- am better at communicating my premises, but I think it’s stayed the same in that it’s whatever I’m passionate about at the time.

Do you find that audiences in non-traditional comedy venues and theatres are more open minded than audiences in traditional comedy clubs?

I like them because I do better in them, but I don’t know if that’s because they are more specifically marketed toward my sense of humor. Comedy Clubs can be sort of vague in their advertising (give away free tickets) and that makes the audience unprepared for what type of show is on- let’s blame the comedy clubs.

When you are writing a new joke do you write it out fully and then take it to the stage or do you take the concept to the stage and then work it out?

I just do it on stage and try it over and over and over again. To friends, family, on stage, wherever.

How do you cope with the occasional writer's block?

Just keep writing.

How often do you spend daily or weekly writing?

About 5 days a week- but sort of happens throughout the day- while driving, walking my dog.

How do you handle hecklers? What was your worst heckling experience?

Every heckler is different-and I have specific lines, but sometimes, you can’t prepare and just have to be in the moment and hope for the best- The worst heckling is always the last one. It feels bad- is a bummer when people don’t like it and verbalize it- I don’t understand why they don’t leave or ask for their money back- because the comic really can’t do anything about it.

Have you ever felt like you were in a slump on stage either with your material or how you were performing your material? What have you done in the past to break the "slumpy" feeling?

All there is to do is to keep trying, keep doing it, keep doing more things. Stop talking about it, worrying about it and just do it again. Take a break if you’re not having fun-do something else, take a vacation, then try it again. If you really don’t enjoy doing stand-up- it’s ok to stop doing it! There are other ways to be creative!

Have you googled yourself and what was the weirdest thing that popped up that was associated with your name?

I googled myself a few times and then, I stopped once I read a negative chat room thing that bummed me out. Who cares what other people think? It’s none of my business. All I need to do is keep doing what I enjoy doing and let go of the results- whether anyone cares doesn’t really matter as long as I’m having a good time.

Go F.I.S.T. Yourself

“Ladies and Gentlemen, boys and girls, children of all ages…”

We are just a week away from D.C.’s #1 competitive improv-comedy event!! That is right, WIT’s 2nd Annual "Fighting Improv Smackdown Tournament" (F.I.S.T.) is almost upon you.

Here it is from WIT’s official F.I.S.T. website:

“…Three-player teams do battle in a single-elimination style test of improv mettle where the audience determines who lives to fight another day. The action is fast. The tension is high. The consequences are severe... win your match and move on to the next round. Lose your match, and there's no road back but the one paved in shame.”

What is so awesome about the F.I.S.T (other than its name), is that it brings together improvisers from all backgrounds from all around the city. For example, competing in this year’s smackdown are some people you might recognize from this here blog, like Seaton Smith, Mike Bass, Mikael Johnson, and DCC4N's friend for life, GWU's ReceSs. Also, DCC4N contributors Aparna Nancherla and “yours truly” will be droppin’ elbows as well.

This is not an event to be missed folks. I plan on seeing as much as I can because 1) TICKETS DO SELL OUT 2) THE CROWDS ARE ALWAYS ROWDY AND READY TO RUMBLE 3) IT IS SOME OF THE MOST UNIQUE AND INNOVATIVE IMPROV YOU WILL SEE ALL YEAR LONG.

SHOWS START THURSDAY FEB 28th @ 8pm at the Flashpoint Theater in Chinatown.

Room Chat

This is gonna be a weekly feature where we chat about rooms and/or our periods over coffee. It's not a date, it's just room chat! (I'm gonna try and make that pitch sound even lamer in future installments)

*Update* Lance Smith is ready to put an end to all of the lies that he is currently spreading about himself. The Sunday night open mic at the Bistro Europa ISN"T finished just yet. There will be two more shows on Feb 24th and Mar 9th before the restaurant gets the ax.

Also, John Conroy wrote us with a hot tip on a possible Friday night room in Bethesda for anyone looking to start a show.

From John: The name of the Restaurant is Parkers American Bistro. I've done 2 shows there before on Friday nights. usually the dinner crowd is done by 9:30 or at the latest 10:00 and that's when the show could begin. There isn't a stage, but it sets up fairly well, there are plenty of tables and chairs in the front section and the bar is all the way in the back. I'd say it's twice the size of Ike's. They have a sound system, that I can show someone to setup easily, but there is no mic stand. I'm sure at the very least they'd be willing to do it monthly and if it's successful weekly or bi-weekly. I recommend going by in person to whoever is interested and I'd be happy to go in with them to help grease the wheels. If there are any other specifics you need to know just let me know. Jon Mumma, Justin Schlegel, Will Hessler, Jermaine, Brandon Ivey, and Tony have all done shows there with me before so they might have some thoughts on how it could be a better room or show too.

If you're interested in learning more you can contact John or us and we'll point you in the right direction.

If you have any leads or ideas for a great show location, leave it in the comments or send us an email.

Open Mic Closings and a city full of openings

Well folks, there seems to be a widening, mack-truck sized hole with which to park that open mic or showcase you've been dreaming about starting.

Taglines open mic which I believe only started a couple of weeks ago, is a victim of the closing of it's host restaurant, the Fire Rock Grill. The Bistro Europa has also closed, leading to the cancellation of the long-running Sunday open mic headed by Lance Smith.

We here at DCC4N have been doing our best to compile a list of possible show locations if you are contemplating the jump to producer. If you have any suggestions for places in the District that would be great for hosting shows, please let us know in the comments or drop us some gmail.

Why produce your next show in the District and not on the outskirts?

(read on to find out why!!)

More shows in the District will help aide the cohesiveness of the comedy scene. Chicago doesn’t have a thriving comedy community because of all of the great shows in Aurora the same way New York isn’t a destination because of the industry in Westchester. When people come to visit DC and want to check out what our fair city has in the way of comedy, they shouldn’t have to go to Woodbridge or Shirlington or other places that people have made up in an effort to fool me into thinking that there are shows that I am missing out on there.

At this point, not only do a majority of the area's comedy shows happen outside of the city, but I can only think of 4 currently running that actually happen inside of it. And that's bad news for any comic without a vehicle because that makes it pretty damn hard to fill your calendar. This is a town where you certainly don't need a car and the result is a city full of people who rely on metro on their nights out. Producing in the city will aide in your ability to secure quality comics and quality audience.

Maybe I'm over-analyzing it, but I think a more centralized scene would go a long way to change the national perception of the DC comedy scene. If you look at the facts, there are small rural areas that produce more local comedy than DC, a city of 600,000 people. If there is one thing I can say for absolutely sure is that DC is filled to brim with ridiculously talented comedians that are ready to plucked into stardom, we just need to make the "AVAILABLE" sign a little bigger and a little brighter.

TJ Miller is on David Letterman tonight

Who is TJ Miller? Sheesh...really? Well, if you saw the lastest JJ. Abrams blockbuster "Cloverfield", he was the only character anyone cared about in the movie. Yeah, the actress who played Beth was incredibly, unworldly hot ("New York AND my penis are underattack!" -Me) but TJ's performance as the guy behind the camera was great.

I f'ing loved the movie. Now, I'm a big TJ Miller (and the actress who played Beth) fan. Seriously, the movie kicks all sorts of ass. You'll love it. As long as you are not like John McBride and don't need to know the answer to every question raise in the movie. "No, John..I don't know why the monster is mad...okay?"

Tonight you can catch TJ on David Letterman @ 11:30pm ET, along with Julia Louis-Dreyfus and Super Furry Animals.
*UPDATE! The clip of his interview after the jump.

Did You Know?(TM) that TJ Miller is an alumni of GWU's sketch group ReceSs? Uh huh, it's true. ReceSs still keeps kicking ass, even without TJ, with a new show this Friday.

Keep supporting local comedians and the local groups that make national comedians!

It's Raining New Shows!

Third new show announcement in three days, people! I just read in a fictional version of Variety that Hollywood was thinking of moving here to capitalize on DC's ambition. They are going to clean us out faster than they cleaned the phosphate out of The Republic of Nauru!(Where my This American Life listeners at!)
This announcement comes courtesy of Steve Henry and concerns a new open mic in Fredericksburg, which might make it a bit difficult for car-less District-dwellers(like the DCC4N staff) to make it out, but a show is a show is great for everyone and three cheers are in order. Perhaps someone wants to start a carpool? Any questions can be sent to Steve at skhenry@whmo.mil and here are the details:

When: Every Tuesday, 9pm, starting on Feb. 5th
Where: Bogey's Sports Bar in Fredericksburg, VA
Why: Because only the best people create rooms
Who: Me, you and the world
What: A place where dreams come true/Open Mic comedy show

Hero of the Week: Jake Young

Everyone knows that we need more quality comedy shows here in the DC area, but few of us are actually doing anything about it. Well the announcement came this week that one such comedian has stepped into the role of producer and is about to give comedians more stage time and fans of comedy more to laugh about with his new monthly show, "The Awesome Room.". We spotlight this fine gentleman in our first "Comedian of the Week." (I'm sorry if you think this title implies that there will be a new comedian of the week each week, but there's no way we could keep up that kind of grueling schedule)
We recently met with Jake Young over a shared pancake topped with delicious Ethiopian food to discuss why anyone would be so amazing as to start their own show. Little did we know that Jake only grants formal interviews to "traditional media," so we were left with this decidedly non-traditional interview.
(Jake's new show premieres on January 31st at 9pm at McGinty's Public House in Downtown Silver Spring. More info at theawesomeroom.com)

Times are tough. But your city isn't filled with all deplorable people. Some are good. Some are better than good. Some are way before their time! Visionaries! So take your friends, loved ones and anyone else you can think of who understands that nice isn't always right. Shit, sometimes naughty is the way I like it, too!

Sincerely,
Santa

4 Then Interview: Rory Scovel

In the 4 Then Interview series, DCC4N hopes to answer the question on many DC comic's minds..."What happens when I leave DC?" In this edition, Rory Scovel "sits down" with us and tries to get us to believe that he misses his friends the most.

Since leaving DC in the dust for a shot at stardom in New York City, Rory Scovel has appeared on Comedy Central's Live at Gotham, toured Canada twice, and placed third in the Seattle Comedy Competition(first and second were taken). Rory returns to DC this weekend for a full week of shows that you should either catch or catch twice.
Wednesday 12/5: Dr. Dremos in Clarendon. DVD taping w/ Kojo Mante, Jay Hastings, Jon Mumma. Free at 8pm
Thursday 12/6: 18th and Red Showcase. Free at 9pm
Friday 12/7: Headlining the Hyatt Hotel in Bethesda, MD. $10 at 8pm
Saturday 12/8: Headlining the Hyatt Hotel again. Fundraiser. $10 at 8pm.
Also on 12/8
: Poonanza at the Warehouse Theater on 7th St. $7 at 10pm

I was lucky enough to have Rory email me answers to questions that I emailed to him the other day. Here are those questions and answers now:

How long were you performing in DC and what were your favorite rooms?

I performed in DC for exactly 3 years. I moved up from SC in February of 04 and started getting on stage in the middle of March. Over the course of 3 years my favorite room of all was Dr. Dremos. It wasn't just the room and the show that made it awesome for me but the whole day. My friends would come over to my house to play video games and drink and smoke and then we'd head out to Clarendon. The crowds were always fun and it was the one open mic that seemed to resemble a real comedy club atmosphere. I also enjoyed Topaz and Bossa on Thursday nights. The best rooms were the ones that weren't just the show but the best to hang out in. When Rendezvous first started I had the best time standing outside on their front porch just talking with other comics before, during and after the show. Because of Dremos on the same night I was only able to do this a few times.

When did you decide it was time to move?

After traveling through Canada for the first time in 2006 I decided it was time to get involved in a new comedy scene. I was originally planning on moving to Chicago when I got home so that I could focus on improv. I wanted to learn improv in Chicago and see how I could apply it to my standup. I loved being in DC and def. wanted to stay with my friends but I knew in order to move on in standup you have to be involved in different scenes so that your act can evolve and you can be influenced and motivated by new performers.
Why did you choose to move to New York?

Because of the Seattle Comedy Competition last year I was able to meet with a few people from CBS and NBC. They told me they were interested in seeing me more often for auditions for random projects. I pretty much had to be in a place where I could drop in for an audition within an hours notice. So it was LA or NYC for me and I love the east coast and have more friends in NYC. That def. made the move a lot easier.
How did your time in DC prepare you for performing in a bigger market?

DC is a great city to start doing standup. 3 years ago it wasn't incredibly difficult to get on stage because there were fewer performers than now. If you could do well at most shows it usually led to invites to other open mics. Seeking out time in rooms wasn't a month or two month wait, usually just a week or two and you could get up. The better you did, the sooner you were back in. Being able to perform frequently is the only way to really get better at standup. DC did that for me and def. prepared me for NYC. I think NYC is a huge jump from DC but really its just a matter of confidence on stage not really the material. So DC taught me how to be a confident performer.
What are you now able to do that you couldn't do in DC?

Well I can't say that I'm able to do this yet but I'm hoping I can say it in the future. By being here in NYC I'm hoping to establish myself amongst the bigger standups and hopefully become a regular opener for someone. Right now I know I can improve my material and my act greatly if I could just perform regularly. To actually get on the road with a comic and do 25 minutes 6-8 times most weekends out of the year is the only way to get better. Right now I don't have any connections or face time with these bigger names and I think NYC might make it easier to change that. Again, can't say thats def. going to be the case though.
What do you miss most about DC?

My friends. My best friends live in DC and they can't be replaced. I think standup comedy really is the wildest mental roller coaster. Having good friends that are right there with you every step of the way and can relate to what you are going through is priceless. It can't be replaced with anything. I wish my friends and I could just get in a van and travel the US doing shows in small venues and coffee houses. I know one day it will happen but its one of those things I wish we could just do right now.

Check out this video of Rory from his appearance on Live at Gotham.
